Kalaloka Institute of Fine Arts

Welcome to Kalaloka - the world of art, represented by a banyan tree that spreads it roots through its branches. Kalaloka will be our hub for all things Indian dance, music and theater. Be it classes, performances, workshops or just jamming sessions to bring artists together - it is all happening here at Kalaloka. Join us by registering for a class or attending a performance.

Classes are held starting September through July over three sessions of three months each - Fall, Winter and Spring. Payment is made for the whole session of three months. Check the FAQ section for more details.

FALL SESSION

Music - Carnatic Vocal

VOC 000 - Theory of Carnatic Music (free and compulsory with other courses)

Content: History of Carnatic music & technical fundamentals. 

Wednesdays 6pm - 6:30pm CST

VOC 101 - Introduction to Carnatic music I (Section1)

Content: 1-7 Sarali with talam, understanding shruthi, songs

Age Group: 4 years to 6 years old

Saturdays 6pm - 6:30pm CST

VOC 101 - Introduction to Carnatic music I (Section2)

Content: 1-7 Sarali with talam, understanding shruthi, songs

Age Group: 7 years to 10 years old

Tuesdays 6pm - 6:30pm

VOC 102 - Introduction to Carnatic music II

Content: 1-14 Sarali with talam, introduction to Jandai, songs

Wednesdays 7pm - 7:30pm CST

VOC 103 - Carnatic Basics I

Content: 1-14 Sarali with talam in three speeds, Jandai varisai, songs

Saturdays 7pm - 7:30pm CST

Instrumental - Carnatic Violin

INV 000 - Prerequisite to learn VOC 101 and 102 for all new students to Carnatic Violin

Content: Students will take VOC 101 and 102 in Fall and start violin classes in Spring. When you register for this class, you will be automatically registered for both the VOC classes. Please check the timings for these classes and register accordingly. Payment will be according to two classes.

Violin classes will be taught by Kartik Balachandran starting Spring 2021.

Content: Understanding Shruthi with Tampura, The main - S,P,S Achal Swaras, Octaves / Stayi, Paltas - Set one in different speeds, Understanding each note with breath, Pronunciations
